Define Success

What is your definition of success? There are a number of definitions for the word success. If you Google the word you will get answers like “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose” or “the attainment of popularity or profit.” I do not think these are accurate definitions for personal success. We become so focused on these textbook definitions of success that it becomes distorted and tainted. We become crippled by these definitions of success that are not our own. We are all consumed with trying to achieve success but we fail to take the time to figure out what would make us feel successful and fulfilled. We do not feel successful because we are judging our success by someone else’s definition of success. Let that sink in for a second and read it again.

Whether we realize it or not from a young age we all look for validation from others especially regarding our success. We base our achievements off of what a few people say about our success. We look to others to see if we have met their standards of success. We become cynical because we feel like we are always falling short of success. Others start to critique our success and we feel the need to change who we are to feel successful. It is critical that you take the time to define success for yourself and not change who you are because a few people did not think you were successful. You have to cut that negativity out of your life like it is cancer. Otherwise you will feel like you are never good enough and it will eat away at you.

I really like how Gary Vee thinks about success. Gary does not care about what anyone else thinks. People like to critique his successes and failures but it does not affect him. The only person’s opinion that matters to him is what he thinks about his successes and failures. You need to define success for yourself and hold onto that. Do not let other people’s thoughts and opinions change your perspective on your success. Your success is what you want it to be not anyone else.
