When we are kids we have an incredible imagination. We have the ability to create fictional worlds for ourselves to get lost and play in. We are able to be creative and come up with new and innovative ideas. Some kids are even able to create imaginary friends. We believe the sky is the limit and that nothing is impossible. The best way to describe a childs imagination is Disney. Nothing is off limits and anything is possible.
One of my favorite quotes by Walt Disney sums up the imagination of kids quite nicely.
“Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” - Walt Disney
As we grow older I think we tend to loose a lot of the imagination and curiosity we had as a kid. Life gets stressful and we feel the need to fit into societies box. Many of us do not know any better and we are just trying to get through our day. I think we all have those days when we are just trying to get through it and creativity takes a back seat to our lives. The problem is we get in the habit of our creativity taking a back seat until it is completely forgotten.
I think that is why places like Disney land appeal to everyone, especially adults. Yes it is certainly expensive to take a trip to any Disney attraction. However, I think it allows adults the ability to let go a little bit. When we are younger we do not have a care in the world and I think places like Disney help us get back to that place. It allows us to open up our minds again to the endless possibilities. We don’t even necessarily need a trip to one of the parks as much as we need to make time to reconnect to our creativity.
For me, Meet the Robinsons is one of my favorite Disney movies. This movie is one of the reasons I decided I wanted to be an engineer (as many of you know that is where I started but not where I ended). Even though that is not the career path that I choose it encouraged me to be creative and to think outside the box. Whenever I am feeling a little down or less creative I always go back to that movie. It helps remind me that every brilliant idea took time to perfect and every idea that pushed the envelope is often disregarded as crazy or impossible.
It is so important to continually nurture your creativity. Do not let outside forces strip you of one of the things that makes you truly unique. We all have something unique we bring to the table, make sure you bring your own creative perspective with you.
