We all are told that self-care is not selfish. While I think many of us “know” this statement to be true, I think many of us tend to gloss over this statement or even feel guilty for thinking it is true. I recently was listening to a podcast that put this statement into perspective. When you are on an airplane if there is a problem they tell you to take care of yourself first so you are able to help others. Some people might think that is selfish to put yourself before someone else but when you think this through it makes a lot of sense. If you are incapacitated you are not good to anyone!
Self-care is just like taking care of yourself first on an airplane. If you do not help yourself first you are not good to anyone. Think of it like this, you are a glass and everything you do for yourself fills up your glass. When you neglect yourself or put other people ahead of yourself you are pouring some of that water out of your glass and into someone else’s. Eventually if you do take care of yourself your glass will be empty. Now take a step back, what if you took care of yourself and did things that made you happy no matter what, your glass would gradually fill up. Now what if you keep up your selfcare instead of giving parts of you away to other people. Here is what happens, when you continually put yourself first and perform self-care your glass continues to fill up and eventually your glass will start to overflow into the glasses of those around you instead of pouring out parts of you to others.
This is an important lesson we all need to learn. A lot of us are living our lives for other people and we are miserable because our glasses are EMPTY! Stop neglecting yourself! Put yourself first. Schedule nonnegotiable things every week that make you happy and fill your glass up so you are able to help those around you. You only have one life to live so make sure you are taking care of yourself and enjoying your life.
