I recently read “A Sucky Love Story” by Brittani Louise Taylor. For anyone who is not familiar with who Brittani is, she is a social media influencer on YouTube, Instagram, and everywhere in between. She is a quirky individual who loves life, her family and her audience.
In her book she shares, you guessed it…her sucky love story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about utilizing online or apps for dating. There are good people on these platforms but I can see where it can quickly become a bad situation. I think Brittani’s story is not uncommon and there is a lot that can be learned from what she went through. At the end of the day, it is important to let people into your life but you need to do so with the utmost caution. Reading Brittani’s story in hindsight I can see the red flags but if I had been going through it I might not have seen the warning signs.
Brittani tells us about how she got caught up in a crazy romance with a guy she met on a dating app. For a while everything seemed to being going pretty well with a few bumps in the road. She thought he was the one. They got engaged and had a son together. Everything on the surface seemed fine, a story book love story to her audience and friends but that could not have been further from the truth. Everything was falling apart. The “perfect” guy turned abusive, manipulative, and was using her. Brittani tried to do everything she could to fix their relationship but he kept manipulating her until he got what he wanted. With the help of her mother she was able to get out of the house they shared and get a lawyer involved. She took him to court to get a restraining order and full custody of their son. In this process she found out that his actions were indicators that he intended to sell her and her son. Brittani was able to get out of this negative situation and turn it into a positive one.
This story is crazy and you are probably thinking that will never happen to me, just like Brittani did. Please be wise with the people you choose to let into your life. While I was reading this book there was something Brittani’s mother said that really struck me and that was “You should never have to beg someone to love you.” When I read that line, I had a bit of an epiphany. I think we all know that we should be with someone who loves us. We should never get into a cycle where we are constantly trying to please someone else or win their love. Please know you are worthy of all the love in the world and you should never have to beg for someone to love you.
