I
just read the book How to Win at the Sport of Business by Mark Cuban. For those
of you who do not know Mark Cuban is an entrepreneur who is on Shark Tank
and is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Shark Tank is actually how I
learned about Mark and he is one of my favorite sharks so I decided to give his
book a read.
Mark
starts off by saying he has not written a book yet because it would imply
he is done learning and knows everything but he says he is definitely still
learning. I love that! Someone with so much success could say look at how much
I know. Instead he is very humble and says yes I know a lot and have had
success but I am still learning. His "book" is made out of blog
posts he has written which I think makes it easy to relate too.
Even
though this book is really short I think it has a lot of value. Here are some
things that I learned from Mark's book:
- We all have dreams but it is easier said than done.
- The little decisions we make often have the most impact. When we decide to get up early or sleep in. These small choices have the most impact on our success.
- Most people will not put in the time to learn. Learning is a life long process. Yes learning takes time and it is nice to relax sometimes but relaxing is for everyone else. If you are doing what you love it should not feel like a chore.
- Everyday there is more competition. Have you done enough today to ensure you are the best?
- The only thing you can truly control is your own effort.
- "You only have to be right once."
- There is such a thing as to many opportunities. Opportunities are great and you need to recognize them in life, however; when you try to take advantage of to many opportunities you can "drown" in them.
- Do not lie to yourself.
- Whining is okay. Everyone tells you not to whine, however; whining is how ideas get formed. When we complain we think of ways to improve or create a new product for our needs. Whining is how successful entrepreneurs are made.
- People take the path of least resistance. No one wants to put in unnecessary effort. People want to do what is easy.
These
are just some of the things I learned from Mark's book. It just goes to show
that great things come in small packages. If you read Mark's book let me know
what you think and what you learned, I would love to know.
