Before I get into this post I want to give a little of a back story. 13 Reasons Why tells the story of a young girl who takes her own life and she leaves behind tapes that explains what led her to make that decision. Hannah talks about the things she went through and how they made her feel. I think we can all relate to Hannah on a certain level. We have all had days when everything seems to be going wrong and we do not think we can keep going until someone helps us up. So remember how you feel on those days when you see someone else who is struggling and be there to help them get back up.
“And what about you - the rest of you - did you notice the scars you left behind? No. Probably not…Because most of them can’t be seen with the naked eye.”
All of our words and actions have impact on the people around us. Our words and actions can cut like a knife. The things we do and say can really hurt those around us in a negative way. We never truly know or understand the impact our words and actions have on those around us.
We never truly understand what an individual is going through. An individual may appear to be happy and enjoying life but under the surface they could be dealing with family problems, emotional term oil, stress, etc. From the outside the person appears to be fine and that our words can do no harm; however, your words could leave a lasting scar. Our words could even be the last thing they could take. You may not mean anything by your words but they can hurt the person.
We all need to take a minute before we say or do something because it can have a profound effect on those around us. We do not always have the intent to hurt someone but we need to be aware of what other people are going through.
Suicide is a heavy subject that people do not want to talk about but we need too. Not talking about it does not make it go away. We cannot pretend that people are not going through these situations. People keep trying to sweep things like this under the rug but it only makes it worse. When we sweep it under the rug people feel like they cannot reach out to someone else and instead of resolving the issue it grows. We need to talk about these topics. We have to start having these conversations because it might just save someone's life.
