Real or Plastic

Are people today real or plastic? This seems like a straightforward question because how could any person not be real. Unfortunately in the world we live in today people can be real or plastic. Real people are individuals who embrace who they are including their imperfections. However, plastic people are individuals who have changed their physical appearance in order to conform to social norms.

Today girls especially experience a great deal of social pressures to look a curtain way.  When girls are young they play with Barbie dolls. Barbie is the perfect woman or at least what society views as the perfect woman. Barbie’s appearance is physically unattainable. When girls are young they do not see the physically unattainable but the ideal image of what they should look like. As they grow up they develop self-esteem issues because they do not look like Barbie. Consequently, girls begin to only see the negatives in their appearance.

As a way to cope some girls physically alter their external appearance. In changing their appearance they change who they are. In pursuit of the physically unattainable many girls get extensive plastic surgery to “correct” their imperfections. By the time it is all said and done the girls are mostly plastic and have become the perfect woman but at what price.

Society values external beauty but at what price? Do you think society pushes the physically unattainable on people? Do you think societies ideals have a negative effect on individuals?
