2018 is ending and 2019 is quickly approaching. Many of us are excited for 2019 because we will have a fresh start, a clean slate. When we start a new year, many people come up with goals and resolutions to accomplish that year. The intention is there but the follow through is not always.
Statistically, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. That is mind boggling but when you really think about New Year’s resolutions it makes a lot of sense. We are so excited to make a list of resolutions that we do not really think about whether they are practical, attainable, or a plan as to how we will achieve them. We set all these lofty goals and try to will them into existence.
Not only do people tend to not think of the practicality of their resolutions they take on a lot of resolutions. I have seen people with entire page of resolutions. It is not bad to have a lot of resolutions you want to tackle but you need to understand you cannot take them all on at once. When I brain storm for my New Year’s goals and resolutions I usually end up with a list with about 10-12 items, that is a lot of change to expect in one year. From there I narrow it down to my top four, these are the things that if they are my only main accomplishment that year I will be happy.
Because people take on so many resolutions people get burned out. They put so much pressure on themselves to accomplish their resolutions at the beginning of the year that they push too hard and do not see the results they want. Think of it this way, you have 4 boxes that need to go upstairs. If you take them all at the same time they will be heavy and you might drop one but if you take them separately they are not as heavy and are less likely to be dropped. Our New Year’s resolutions are like these boxes, on their own they are manageable but when you start stacking them on top of one another they start to take their toll quickly.
So how do you set yourself up for successfully achieving your 2019 resolutions. I recommend using December to wrap up everything from 2018 so you can hit the ground running in 2019. Personally, I know momentum is important for me so I don’t want to have to worry about things from 2018. And then make sure you narrow down your goals for the year, I recommend four main resolutions that can be broken down into manageable sub goals so you can start a new resolution each quarter.
I hope you are just as excited as I am for the New Year and setting new resolutions! Always remember that the past has no bearing on whether or not you will be able to successfully achieve your resolutions in the future. Let’s make 2019 the best year yet!
