Social media is an amazing tool but at the same time can
also be a huge crutch. For some people social media has become a way to express
themselves and to expand their network. But for others social media is a
distraction, it is away to fill our time and avoid boredom. Social media has
become a crutch for individuals as it gives the illusion that you are doing
something productive when all the content they are consuming has no real value.
Social media has become apart of our daily lives. It is
estimated that around 70 percent of people utilize social media in some
capacity. We live in a busy world, which can be overwhelming at times, and
sometimes we do need a way to escape from the stress. Many people turn to
social media to relieve that stress, but they are taking it a step to far in
some cases where they use it to completely escape life. We all have been there.
We go on social media to check a few things and before we know it, it’s an hour
later and we have no idea where the time went.
Before the Internet was widely used, people had to occupy
their time and I find it funny that you never hear stories of these individuals
being bored. Before the Internet came to be people had to entertain themselves.
Kids would go outside to play and would make up their own games. Adults would
read a book or have an intelligent conversation. But today there is an epidemic
of boredom that is becoming ever-more apparent. For entertainment people are in
front of the screen and the majority of the content they are consuming has no
value.
Social media has become a very valuable tool for some
individuals but for others it has become an obstacle. If you want to maximize
your time you must learn to not use social media as a distraction but as a
tool.
Do you use social media as a distraction? How could you
change how you utilize social media? What are some strategies you can implement
to use social media to maximize your time?
