Lately I have been doing a deep dive into all things Rachel Hollis. If you have never heard of her I highly recommend you get all of the things, seriously. Her books (she has a new one coming out in March 2019!), listen to her podcast, watch her documentary, and everything else. I just recently watched her documentary, Made for More (which you can find on Amazon if you are interested and I highly recommend it), and there was so many good take a ways but one really stood out to me.
She talks about how the things you do not like about your life are because you have not dealt with your baggage. At first, I did not understand the weight of this statement. It took me some time to wrap my head around that statement but the more I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The world is full of negativity and cynicism but none of us are born with those things in our hearts. How we perceive the world is tainted by the people we learn it from and their view was tainted by the person who taught them. It a never-ending cycle of tainted perspective unless we take our perspective into our own hands.
Now you are probably wondering what this has to do with anything but it relates. How we perceive things in our life is impacted by how we perceive the world. Some of the things we perceive as bad are valid like touching a hot pot on the stove is bad because no matter how you slice it you will burn your hand. Not every bad thing that happens should be viewed negatively, however. Rachel talks about how she lost her brother when she was very young and it really affected her. She explained you can never forget the pain, trauma, or lose you go through but you can change how you choose to look at it. She said if you only remember the bad you forget the good. In her situation she could focus on the loose of her brother but then she would lose the value of his life.
When Rachel started talking about this point I realized many of us need to work on our perspective. Our perspective is tainted by others and society. It is a good reminder to be intentional with how you perceive a situation.
How has your perception been tainted? How can you be more intentional with how you look at different situations?
